The Power and Performance Coach

I’ve spent the last two decades, working in the performance space as an actor, voice and dialect coach.

Connecting to audiences, and training actors how to do the same.

For every stage.

I quickly saw the power of performance coaching on a wider stage.

I started to coach non-actors. Regular people who just wanted to be heard: Founders preparing for funding rounds. Architects wanting to inject some colour into their pitches. Politicians needing to hold their space.

And although it felt different to training actors, their goal was often the same.

They also had to stand up and speak to a live audience, make them listen and believe their message.

Performance techniques are rooted in everyday human communication.

Training awareness, intention, and flexibility through the body, breath, and voice.

And working with actors, means I understand the complexity of working with speed, precision and nuance in a creative space- without getting in your way.

My approach is a careful balance between the creative and the tactical to support and empower you to share your voice with freedom.

More about Me

  • I left a degree in Modern Languages to train as an actor. And early on in my performance career, a lucrative side hustle as a Dialect coach swiftly led me on another path…to learn more about the science of speech and the physicality of accents.

So I studied a Masters in Voice at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. And I began to develop my own voice. To train new habits, address my dysfunctional breathing, and figure out a way to stop losing my voice, and learn to trust it.

But moving to Mexico and then Spain raised huge questions for me about vocal identity and ideologies of power which continue to inform my work today.

  • From my two decades of coaching actors and everyday humans, I know that every individual is deeply complex. Everyone is different. And your voice tells the story of who you are.

And so my approach is one of radical nuance. Weaving together integrated performance techniques with science. Pilates and Voice training. Embodied leadership alongside interactional sociolinguistics. Improvisation with evidence-based research.

  • My research thesis inspired me to train as a Pilates instructor, developing an integrated approach to Voice and Pilates training for embodied awareness, physical strength and vocal stamina.

I honed my speech and dialect skills with Knight-Thompson Speechwork in NYC under the watchful ears of Dudley Knight and Phil Thompson.

And my experience in both Pilates and Speech training mean that I work from a foundation of descriptivism (what/how/why) vs. a more limited prescriptive approach (right/wrong).

  • When I’m not delivering Power and Performance programmes with trusted clients, I work with RADA Business as a freelance Voice and Performance coach.

I am a Voice teacher at Shakespeare’s Globe. And an Accent - Dialect Coach for stage and screen.

I remain a member of the International Voice and Speech Trainers Association, VASTA, serving on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Voice and Speech Review (VSR) journal from 2017-2020.
